Bonney Lake Commuter Guide: Getting to Tacoma, Seattle, and Beyond

Bonney Lake Community Guides

This Bonney Lake commuter guide starts with one fact most buyers miss: no local bus runs inside Bonney Lake. The city left the Pierce Transit service area in 2012. What it has is one weekday Sound Transit bus, ST Express 596, that runs from the Bonney Lake Park and Ride down SR-410 to the Sounder train at Sumner Station, and nothing else. Everything else is your car.

I work out of an office on West Tapps Drive, so I make these drives myself, and the commute is the question I hear most from buyers coming from King County. This guide covers how long Bonney Lake commutes really are, how the 596 and the Sounder S Line fit together, what driving to Tacoma, Seattle, the Kent Valley and JBLM involves, and one parking change at Sumner Station that matters this fall. My Puyallup commuter guide covers the town next door.

Bonney Lake Commute at a Glance

  • Average one-way commute, City of Bonney Lake: 32.1 minutes; 15% of commuters travel an hour or more (Census ACS 2020-2024)
  • Tehaleh average: 46.7 minutes, with 30% at an hour or more
  • Transit link: ST Express 596, weekdays only, 9 morning trips to Sumner Station and 10 afternoon trips back, timed to the Sounder S Line
  • Sounder, Sumner to Seattle: 44 minutes northbound to King Street Station, 13 weekday trains each way
  • Fall 2026 change: the Sumner Station surface lot on Narrow Street closed October 14 for garage construction

How Long Is the Commute From Bonney Lake?

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2020 through 2024 asks workers how long their trip to work takes. Inside the city limits, the answer averages 32.1 minutes one way, close to the Pierce County average of 31.3. The averages hide where the long trips are. Bonney Lake is a bigger place than the city line, and the farther you live from SR-410, the longer the drive gets.

Area Average commute 45 minutes or more An hour or more Work from home
City of Bonney Lake 32.1 min 27% 15% 16%
Lake Tapps (CDP) 36.5 min 30% 21% 19%
Prairie Ridge (CDP) 36.4 min 33% 16% 13%
Tehaleh (CDP) 46.7 min 52% 30% 22%
Pierce County 31.3 min 24% 14% 14%

Source: Census American Community Survey 2020-2024 five-year estimates, tables B08303, B08013 and B08301. Commute shares are of workers who do not work from home. CDP = census-designated place, an unincorporated area the Census Bureau draws for counting.

Tehaleh stands out. More than half of its commuters spend 45 minutes or more getting to work, and almost a third spend an hour or more. It is also where the most people work from home, about one in five. Many Tehaleh buyers I meet are hybrid workers who accept a long drive two or three days a week in exchange for a newer house. If you will be in the office five days, run the drive at rush hour before you write an offer.

The ST 596 and Sounder: Bonney Lake's One Transit Link

Transit in Bonney Lake comes down to a single route. Sound Transit's ST Express 596 runs from Bay 5 at the Bonney Lake Park and Ride, at 184th Avenue East and SR-410, to Bay 3 at Sumner Station. It runs weekdays only, toward Sumner in the morning and back to Bonney Lake in the afternoon. There is no midday, evening or weekend trip. The ride takes 11 to 13 minutes in the morning and 9 to 17 minutes in the afternoon.

The schedule is built around the train. Every morning 596 reaches Sumner 10 minutes before a northbound Sounder S Line departure, and every afternoon bus leaves Sumner 5 minutes after a southbound train arrives. Here is what that looks like from the Park and Ride to Seattle's King Street Station:

Fares on the 596 are $3.00 for adults and $1.00 with ORCA LIFT or a senior or disability card. Riders 18 and under ride free on all Sound Transit service. Sounder fares run $3.25 to $5.75 one way, depending on distance. The S Line itself takes 44 minutes from Sumner to King Street northbound and about 37 minutes coming back.

Commuting From Bonney Lake to Tacoma

Tacoma is the shorter commute. From Bonney Lake City Hall to the Tacoma Dome it is about 15 miles, roughly 26 minutes with no traffic. The route runs west on SR-410 to SR-167 and then to I-5 through the Puyallup and Fife side of the valley. Tehaleh adds about five miles. Nearly every trip out of Bonney Lake starts on SR-410, so where you live relative to that highway shapes every commute.

Transit to Tacoma works, but only at certain times. Three southbound morning trains leave Sumner for the Tacoma Dome, at 6:42, 7:12 and 8:32 a.m. Two of them line up with a 596: take the 6:15 a.m. bus to catch the 6:42 train, which reaches the Dome at 7:07, or the 6:55 a.m. bus to catch the 7:12 train. Coming home, trains leave the Tacoma Dome for Sumner at 4:06, 4:30 and 5:15 p.m., and each one has a 596 waiting. It is a workable setup for a downtown Tacoma job with steady hours. It does not work for shift work.

Commuting From Bonney Lake to Seattle and the Eastside

Driving to downtown Seattle from Bonney Lake City Hall is about 36 miles. With no traffic, the route runs SR-410 to SR-167 north and then to I-5, about 52 minutes. Bellevue is about the same distance by SR-167 and I-405. Those no-traffic times are a floor, not an estimate. A peak-hour drive through the Kent Valley can run much longer, and the gap between a good day and a bad one is the reason so many Seattle commuters from here choose the train.

Sumner Station also has a second option that runs all day. ST Express 578 runs from Puyallup through Sumner, Auburn and Federal Way into downtown Seattle seven days a week. Northbound buses leave Sumner about every 30 minutes from 7:32 a.m. on weekdays. It takes about 39 minutes to reach Federal Way Downtown Station, where you can transfer to Link light rail, and about 70 minutes to Fourth and Pike. The 596 does not connect to it midday, so a 578 rider from Bonney Lake drives to Sumner first.

Bonney Lake Commuter Guide to the Kent Valley, the Airport and JBLM

A lot of Bonney Lake commuters are not headed downtown at all. The warehouse and manufacturing jobs in the Kent Valley, the airport and Joint Base Lewis-McChord all draw from here. Here is how far each one is, measured from Bonney Lake City Hall with no traffic:

Destination Miles No-traffic drive Main route
Sumner Station 4.6 7 min SR-410
Auburn Station 13.1 20 min SR-410, SR-167
Tacoma Dome 15.1 26 min SR-410, SR-167, I-5
Kent Station 18.1 26 min SR-410, SR-167
JBLM (I-5 exit 120) 23.9 36 min SR-410, SR-512, I-5
Sea-Tac Airport 25.5 40 min SR-410, SR-167
Bellevue Transit Center 35.6 48 min SR-167, I-405
King Street Station, Seattle 36.5 52 min SR-167, I-5

Distances and no-traffic times are road-network estimates from OpenStreetMap routing, measured from Bonney Lake City Hall. Peak-hour trips take longer. From Tehaleh, add about five miles and ten minutes to each.

Military families should look at JBLM closely. The base is about 24 miles away, and the drive crosses SR-512 rather than following the Sounder line, so the train does not help. Kent Valley jobs are the opposite case. At 18 miles, Kent Station is closer by distance than Tacoma, and the 596 plus one Sounder stop gets you there. Northbound S Line trains stop at Auburn and Kent on the way to Seattle.

Parking at Sumner Station Changed This Fall

Sumner Station is where most Bonney Lake transit trips end up, and its parking is in transition. Sound Transit closed the surface lot on Narrow Street on October 14, 2026, leaving only four ADA spaces, to make room for construction. New spaces next to the garage site on Harrison Street opened October 12. The garage is designed for about 600 stalls with EV charging. Sound Transit's station page does not give an opening date, and it points riders to the Puyallup Station garage and surface lot in the meantime.

For Bonney Lake commuters, this makes the 596 a stronger choice than it was a year ago. If you leave your car at the Bonney Lake Park and Ride, you skip the hunt for a Sumner space. That only works if your schedule fits the bus.

What This Bonney Lake Commuter Guide Means for Where You Buy

The census numbers point the same direction as my own drives. The closer a house is to SR-410 and the Park and Ride, the more options you have. Here is how I would sort it:

Jurisdiction matters too. Tehaleh and much of the Lake Tapps shoreline are unincorporated Pierce County, not the City of Bonney Lake, so the schools, utilities and rules change by address. My Lake Tapps vs. Bonney Lake guide and Bonney Lake relocation guide sort those out, and the Sumner-Bonney Lake school district guide covers schools.

Bonney Lake Commuter Guide: Questions I Hear Most

Is there public transit in Bonney Lake, WA?
